For more than eight years, Arte Carew has been a dedicated member of the Shepherd’s Pantry family, generously giving his time to help ensure our neighbors have food on their tables.
Helping others has always been part of who Arte is. Growing up, his father instilled in him the importance of serving those in need, often reminding him, “There are people who have less than we do, and we have to help.” That lesson has stayed with him throughout his life.
Before joining Shepherd’s Pantry, Arte volunteered through his local parish and with St. Vincent de Paul, helping provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to families in need. He later began picking up donated baked goods from a local Shaw’s before becoming involved with Shepherd’s Pantry. His first job with Shepherd’s Pantry was the weekly meat pickups, and for years Arte faithfully collected meat donations from Hannaford, delivering them to the Windham Presbyterian Church to help prepare for Monday distributions.
When the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way the pantry operated, Arte continued volunteering as Shepherd’s Pantry transitioned to drive-thru distributions, always willing to lend a helping hand.
To Arte, Shepherd’s Pantry is much more than a place to volunteer.
“It’s like another family. You meet so many wonderful people, everyone gets along, and you build friendships that last.” – Arte Carew
One of the things Arte treasures most is the friendships he’s built over the years. He says the volunteers become like family, united by a shared commitment to helping others and making a difference in the community.
Although he’s currently taking a break from volunteering, Arte looks forward to the day he can return to the pantry and reconnect with everyone. We know our volunteers are looking forward to welcoming him back as well.
Arte, thank you for your years of dedicated service, your generous spirit, and the kindness you’ve shown to so many. Volunteers like you are the heart of Shepherd’s Pantry, and we’re grateful to have you as part of our family.
