On March 18th, the Windham Senior Center was filled with kindness and community spirit as Kids in Service gathered to support Shepherd’s Food Pantry. Inspired by the picture book Maddie’s Fridge, which sheds light on poverty and hunger, the children took action to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
Together, they assembled 16 snack bags and 19 birthday bags for pantry clients. Each birthday bag was thoughtfully packed with cake mix, frosting, candles, a can of Sprite (a substitute for oil and eggs), and an aluminum cake pan—ensuring everyone can celebrate their special day, regardless of circumstance. The snack bags were filled with treats such as cereal, crackers, cookies, and granola bars, bringing comfort and joy to recipients.
In addition to the care packages, the children wrote heartfelt letters to local seniors, sparking meaningful connections—some even began pen pal friendships!
This effort was made possible thanks to generous support: the Recreation Department donated the bags, the Windham Senior Center provided the space, and families contributed time and supplies. The Shepherd’s Pantry clients were deeply touched by the thoughtful gifts, a testament to the impact of compassion in action.
